March Math Skills Review for 2nd & 3rd Grades

Is it important to review Math Skills throughout the year? Yes! When we learn new information, we remember it best immediately after we’ve learned it. It is easy to forget skills, even just a few days or weeks after we’ve learned them. That is why it is important that we make time to have students review previously learned skills.

There are a lot of Math skills being taught in the 2nd and 3rd grades and these skills need to be repeatedly reinforced throughout the year.

For teachers looking to add some holiday flair to the review of Math skills in the month of March, I’ve created March Math Skills Review for 2nd & 3rd Grades with a St. Patrick’s Day theme!

Snowman Graphing for 2nd and 3rd Grades (Winter Math Activities)

wz 253 f

Looking for fun Winter Math activities? Check out my Snowman Graphing for 2nd and 3rd Grades unit. Your students will have fun creating unique ‘dressed’ snowmen. After all are complete, the graphing activity(ies) can begin!Great as a whole class activity, or in cooperative groups and/or centers. This has been created for 2nd and 3rd grades, however younger or older students might enjoy as well.

Directions (included in the download):

Snowman Activity Directions
(Students will have fun creating their own unique snowman!)
Distribute or place copies of the following snowman pages. On each page will be 1 snowman and several colored articles of clothing.
Students are to cut out each piece along with the snowman and then begin to create unique snowmen by gluing the clothing of their choice on to his/her snowman. (One page of this download provides the snowman template page without color. Use this page if you desire to have students color the article of clothes themselves.)

Snowman Graphing Directions
After all the snowmen have been created, work as a class to create a graph (or graphs) showing the articles of clothing (and their colors) that were used! This can be a very simple graph for younger students or can be multiple graphs displaying much greater detail. This download does provide some ‘simple and ready to use’ graphs for students if more
detailed ones are not assigned or demonstrated. Also included our uncolored articles of clothing which can be colored and used on the
provided graphs.

Ideas:
Use the first half of this activity (the creation of the snowmen) as a center activity.
Divide students up into cooperative groups and have them work to create a graph (or multiple graphs) of the snowmen created by group members.
Create a bulletin board around the activity displaying the snowmen as well as a graph (or graphs created).

Geography – USA Teaching Resources

Geography has always been a subject that I loved teaching, especially surrounding the USA. I also love when lessons can be made to cross over into other subject areas or become ‘hands-on’.

Over the last two weeks, I’ve created several NEW Geography related resources and I’m excited to share them with you!

All of these NEW resources are part of my Learning about the USA series…

wz 274 a

The 1st is a 150 page download which provides you 3 maps of each state:

* Blank outline
* Outline with State Capital
* Outline with Major Cities

This resource can be used in too many ways for me to list here but I’ll give you a few ideas…

* Cut out the blank outline and place on cardboard. Using homemade salt dough, students can create a 3-D relief map on top of the state outline, sculpting in rivers, mountains, etc. Once dry, have students paint them, green= land, brown= mountains, blue= rivers.

* Create a state book using the outlines. Students can do this by copying and cutting out several copies of the blank outline and one each of the others. The first blank outline will serve as the cover. Students can use each of the pages to create a fun book about the state.

* Using the outline maps with cities, ask students to add things such as major highways, historical landmarks, etc.

Also ready for you to download…

These new resources can be used to create a variety of cross-curricular lessons and lead to hours of learning.

Learning about the U.S.A. – State Birds –

Why does each state in the U.S. have a state bird, a state flower or other state selected ‘thing’? As a teacher, I was once asked this very question. I didn’t know the answer but I went looking. This is what I found…It is done to instill a sense of local state pride and patriotism and is a holdover from the early days when states were almost independent countries.

So why have a study on ‘State Birds’? My answer: For the wide range of learning that will occur during such a study! That is why I’ve created a MEGA Bundle of materials designed to provide students with a creative way, an inspiring way, to study ‘State Birds’…

wz 278 a

As they are completing their studies, students will exercise valuable skills such as…

  • researching
  • reading to comprehend informational text
  • organizing information
  • disseminating information

They will also be completing a cross-curricular study combining the following…

  • Language Arts
  • Science
  • Geography

This BUNDLE contains over 700+ pages and covers all 50 states and more…

wz 278 B

wz 278 C

Multiple pages are giving for students to report what they have learned. Some pages include sections for drawing. Also included: Pages designed to be used for different age groups.)

NEW Color & Create a Story Worksheets spark CREATIVITY!

Most children have a natural creative streak but sometimes it is hard for them to get an idea out of their heads and onto a piece of paper. That’s why I’m currently creating my NEW “Color & Create a Story” Worksheets.

These are all designed to spark children’s imagination by providing them a picture on which to base their story. First, your child (or students) will color a picture. Then, they are given space to create a story about the picture!

Here are several examples of my NEW worksheets:

If you’d like to view all available worksheets, simply go to CHSH-Teach:

I am also adding these worksheets to my Teachers Pay Teachers Store (under my ‘Writing’ Category)

Groundhog Day – Classroom Learning made fun!

Groundhog Day

Every February 2, thousands gather at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to await the spring forecast from a special groundhog. Known as Punxsutawney Phil, this groundhog will emerge from his simulated tree trunk home and look for his shadow, which will help him make his much-anticipated forecast. According to legend, if Phil sees his shadow the United States is in store for six more weeks of winter weather. But, if Phil doesn’t see his shadow, the country should expect warmer temperatures and the arrival of an early spring.

History of Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day originates from an ancient celebration of the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox—the day right in the middle of astronomical winter. According to superstition, sunny skies that day signify a stormy and cold second half of winter while cloudy skies indicate the arrival of warm weather.

The trail of Phil’s history leads back to Clymer H. Freas, city editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper. Inspired by a group of local groundhog hunters—whom he would dub the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club—Freas declared Phil as America’s official forecasting groundhog in 1887. As he continued to embellish the groundhog’s story year after year, other newspapers picked it up, and soon everyone looked to Punxsutawney Phil for the prediction of when spring would return to the country.

Other Groundhogs Around the United States

While Punxsutawney Phil claims to be the nation’s official forecasting groundhog, he’s not the only furry forecaster in the United States. Some other notable contenders include General Beauregard Lee of Atlanta, GeorgiaSir Walter Wally of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Jimmy of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

There are even more groundhog forecasters in the running such as Octorara Orphie of Quarryville, Pennsylvania—competition right next door to Phil—Staten Island Chuck from the Staten Island Zoo, Unadilla who hails from Nebraska, Buckeye Chuck from Ohio, French Creek from West Virginia, and the Cajun Groundhog from Louisiana. Ridge Lea Larry is a “stuffed groundhog” from Western New York, and the Tennessee Groundhog of Silver Point, Tennessee, is actually someone dressed up like a groundhog on a motorcycle.

While Groundhog Day is a way to have a little fun at mid-winter, climate records and statistics tell us that winter probably isn’t over. Climatologically speaking, the three coldest months of the year are December, January, and February, so winter typically still has a bit to go when the groundhog comes out in search of his shadow on February 2.
