October Vocabulary & Spelling with Circle Letters

This circle letter resource is designed to give younger students the ability to see a word and then spell it using circle letter manipulatives. This resource can be used to reinforce letter learning, letter sounds, formation of words and much more.

With an October-theme, students will love creating / forming words that are related to Halloween such as bat, web, pumpkin, squash, candy, spider, cat, leaf and house. You will receive two copies of each word mat (color and b/w).

You can use for whole class instruction, small group interactions or in centers.

Here are 2 examples of variation of use:
#1 For whole class instruction, make transparencies using the colored word mats. Give students prepared circle letters (instructions included) and the b/w word mats. As you display each transparency, students can follow along and spell each word on their word mat using their circle letters.

#2 For centers, laminate and attach each colored word mat to a metal backing (such as a small cookie sheet). Laminate and cut out the circle letters and attach a magnet on the back of each. Students can then use the circle letters to spell each word on the metal backed word mat! FUN!!

Want to teach additional October-themed vocabulary words? Simple! Just make a list, and as you teach each word, have students use their circle letters at the desks to spell each word!

Why is a Strong Vocabulary Important?

We use spoken and written words every single day to communicate ideas, thoughts, and emotions to those around us. Sometimes we communicate successfully, and sometimes we’re not quite so successful. “That’s not what I meant!” becomes our mantra (an often repeated word or phrase). However, a good vocabulary can help us say what we mean.

All too often, High School students do not obtain (or maintain) the vocabulary they should have. That is why this unit can be a valuable tool in your arsenal!
